Relaxed weekend in and around Quito / Spokojny weekend w i poza Quito

After the research trips, I decided to stay in Quito the following weekend. So, on Saturday I went to the ethnographic museum Minalae not too far from home. The themes of the museum were indigenous food, textiles and pottery around Ecuador. The museum was really small, but not bad. I also spent some time looking at souvenirs in the gift shop. Afterwards, I went by foot to the artisanal market, also to look for souvenirs (and enjoy some great “artisanal” - meaning homemade - ice cream). I also went to the old town once again. This time, I had a look inside the church La Iglesia de la Compañía de Jesús, which UNESCO names as one of the 100 most important buildings in the world. Points of interest include, especially, the walls decorated with gold leaf and paintings “translated” from paintings found in Augsburg in Bavaria, Germany. Also the foundation of the building is made of volcanic stone taken from the nearby volcano Pichincha. We weren’t permitted to take photos, but you can read more and look at pictures in the net here. Besides the church, I also went to the market there, where you can buy various fruits, vegetables, flowers and lunch.

On Sunday I travelled to my friend Hannah’s place for her birthday. Her family got together because the 1st and 2nd of November are holidays in Ecuador during which people eat guaguas (decorated bread usually in the form of a little man) with colada morada, a sort of fruit soup which is complicated to prepare. The get-together took place in Hannah’s father Juan’s second house, who I finally met. Juan and Hanna intend to make the house into a cultural center some time in the future – a really cool idea in my opinion. In the kitchen, there was a huge brick oven which they were cooking pizza and German flammkuchen in. You had to pay attention, because the pizzas were already ready after just two minutes! After the pizza, we made our own guaguas – you can see the monster that mine became in the picture below. I ended up spending the night at Hannah’s place and went back to town with Hannah’s brother after a walk around outdoors. I spent the rest of the day more or less relaxing at home.

As far as work goes, I’m still gathering the information I have from the research we did and I began writing the report. I’m making progress, but I’m still not sure how much I’ll be able to finish before I leave. After all, I have less than a month left here!

Next week I’m travelling to Lago Agrio, the last city where we are going to carry out the workshops…

Po podróżach badawczych podjąłem decyzję, że zostanę w Quito na ten weekend. W sobotę poszedłem do muzeum etnograficznego Minalae nie tak daleko od domu. Tematem są autochtonne jedzenie, tkaniny, i ceramika w Ekwadorze. Muzeum było malutkie, ale niezłe. Też spędziłem trochę czasu w sklepiku patrząc na pamiątki. Potem poszedłem na piechotę na rynek rzemieślniczy, żeby również szukać pamiątek (i cieszyć się pysznymi lodami „rzemieślniczymi”, czyli domowej roboty). Też byłem jeszcze raz w starym mieście. Tym razem, zwiedziłem kościół Iglesia de La Compañía de Jesús, który według UNESCO jest jedenym ze stu najważniejszych budynków na świecie. Ciekawostki tam są, przede wszystkim: ściany przystrojone złotem płatkowym i obrazy „przetłumaczone” z obrazów w Augsburgu w Bawarii. Trzeba wspomnieć dodatkowo, że fundament budynku jest z kamienia wulkanicznego. Nie wolno było robić zdjęć, ale możecie poczytać więcej i zobaczyć zdjęcia w sieci tu. Poza tym byłem na rynku tam, gdzie można kupić różne owoce, warzywa, kwiaty i obiady.

W niedzielę pojechałem do przyjaciółki Hanny z okazji jej urodzin. Rodzina spotkała się na imprezie, bo 1. i 2. listopada są święta w Ekwadorze, kiedy ludzie jedzą guagua (chleb zwykle w kształcie małego mężczyzny) z colada morada, co jest rodzajem zupy owocowej, która jest raczej skomplikowana w przygotowaniu. Spotkanie było w drugim domu ojca  Hanny - Juana, którego wreszcie poznałem. Juan i Hannah mają zamiar zrobić tam centrum kultury w przyszłości – całkiem fajny pomysł uważam. W kuchni tego domu był wielki piekarnik z cegieł. Tam gotowali właśnie pizze i niemiecki podpłomyk. Trzeba było uważać, bo pizze pogotowały się już po dwóch minutach! Potem, zrobiliśmy własne guagua – mój potworek jest poniżej na zdjęciu. Nocowałem tam u Hanny i wróciłem do miasta z jej bratem po spacerze po okolicy. Resztę dnia spędziłem spokojnie w domu.

Jeśli chodzi o pracę, zbieram jeszcze informacje z badania i zacząłem pisać raport. Robię postępy, ale dalej nie jestem pewien, ile zdążę napisać przed wyjazdem. Przecież, teraz zostaje mi tu mniej niż miesiąc!

W następnym tygodniu już wyjadę do Lago Agrio, ostatniego miasta, gdzie mamy przeprowadzić warsztaty…
